David Beckham was left shell-shocked when James Corden pranked him with a hideous commemorative statue.
On Monday night’s “Late Late Show”, Corden revealed that he thought it would be a funny idea to swap out L.A. Galaxy’s real statue of the soccer superstar for an extremely unflattering fake.
Beckham himself had not seen the finalized version of the genuine statue, which now stands outside of the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, so Corden had the perfect opportunity to trick the unwitting athlete.
“It’s slightly different than it was when I saw it in Chicago,” Beckham said as the ugly effigy was revealed.
Corden, who was watching the events unfold on a monitor backstage, could barely contain himself with laughter.
“I believe, what I did here was try to capture you in motion,” the fake sculptor explained to the perplexed soccer player. “Yeah, but there was capturing me in motion but also making me… look at my chin!” Beckham replied.
“The only thing that’s good is the hair,” he added. “It looks like Stretch Armstrong…. There is no way that can go in front of the stadium. It’s embarrassing.”
It wasn’t until the forklift operator accidentally shattered the statue that Corden revealed himself, but at that point, he got Beckham’s priceless reactions on camera.
